Alyce A. Tavernier, 89, of Carthage
Nov 21, 2018Tavernier, 89, of 827 State St. Carthage, died Wednesday morning, November 21, 2018 at her home where she was under the care of her family and Hospice of Jefferson County. Alyce was born on October 27, 1929 in Theresa, the daughter of the late Glenn and Helen (Giltz) Alverson. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degree in education from Potsdam State College. She married Jack M. Tavernier on June 25, 1951 at St. Mary’s Church in Evans Mills with the Rev. Henry W. McFadden officiating.Alyce was a kindergarten, second grade and remedial reading teacher for over 30 years. She taught in Rochester, Great Bend, Deferiet, Lowville and Pulaski, eventually retiring with the South Jefferson School District in 1990. Jack died on October 23, 1993. Alyce was a member of the Red Hat Society. She loved reading while sipping coffee, gardening, feeding and watching the birds. Her favorite memories were spending summers at camp fishing on the St. Lawrence River near Ogdensburg with friends and family. She was a volunteer at the Carthage Free Library and helped with the playground construction at the Carthage Park.She is survived by her two daughters and son-in-law: Susan Tavernier, Kathryn and her husband William Sochia, all of Carthage; four grandchildren: Matthew, Stephanie, Amy and Juliet. Her three sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews also survive her. She is predeceased by her two brothers, Austin and Charles Alverson.Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, November 25 at the Bezanilla-McGraw Funeral Home with Rev. Walter Giles officiating.
